Molly was a handful. At age five, she declared her life's philosophy only to quickly realize--after she betrayed her best friend and wallowed about in the lonely aftermath--it was an unsustainable lifestyle. Still, what's a girl to do? Who's a girl to be? Do we ever fully let go of, transcend those fantastical and tragic worlds we inhabited as kids? Join Molly in this solo-show while she sifts through a memory-limbo of a rural 1980's childhood (think waterbeds, Jem, lots of trees, dirt, and adulterated Barbies), and pieces together her journeys through loyalties, lusts, phases, identities; her journeys through girl: who to be and how to be and, lest we forget, Spelling homework. |

Molly Bain has been performing since she was just a young tyke. It was a difficult go at first because she was ~and sometimes still is~ very shy in front of people, unless you are in her immediate family and then, lucky you, there's your cross. Raised in Michigan 's Upper Peninsula , Molly hated reading until she began obsessively reviewing the liner notes and lyrics of 80's hair bands and a torn up copy of Flowers in the Attic, which she used to procure friends by animatedly reading aloud all the dirty parts on the bus. Molly is also an alum of Interlochen Arts Camp, where she was first introduced to one-person memoir-esque storytelling, created her first such piece and a love was born. In college, she studied in The University of Michigan's Department of Theatre and Drama performing in many shows, including a joint production with Purple Rose Theatre (dir. Guy Sanville) and two plays by Kim Yaged, “Kim's Spot” and “The America Project”. Molly left the department after two years though, craving cultural studies and the artsy world beyond the traditional stage where she studied with poet Alice Fulton and with narrative-essayist-extraordinaire, Lillian Back. During her last couple of years of schooling and even into her professional career at The University of Michigan's Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Affairs, Molly continued performing in many student-devised and -directed projects, two of her favorites being Blueprint (written by David Garcia and directed by Johanna Schuster-Craig) and Tango (a Queer mock-up of the Polish classic, under the direction of Brian Lobel). |
